Bloodwork or blood tests are a type of diagnostic service that we offer here at Edgemont Veterinary Clinic. Performed by our Registered Veterinary Technicians, blood tests provide us with key information about your pet’s health and wellbeing that cannot be retrieved and analyzed otherwise. Why would my pet need to have bloodwork done?

Our veterinarians may request a blood test on your pet for a variety of reasons. If your puppy or kitten is coming in for their first ever check-up, bloodwork is done routinely to look for any pre-existing health conditions and so we can have a baseline sample to compare future tests with. Bloodwork may also be conducted before starting your pet on a new prescription, treatment, or to see if they will be good candidates for anesthesia prior to surgery.

How are blood tests done on pets?

The process is over in a matter of seconds. Blood is drawn via injection. Most pets feel little to no discomfort and do not need to any kind of sedation for the procedure.

How fast can I get my pet’s blood test results?

Because of our in-house laboratory, we are able to provide you with same-day results for the most common types of tests. We work with independent labs for more complex cases. For those kinds of cases, it typically takes roughly two business days for us to receive results.
