When should kittens be vaccinated?

In the veterinary community, we typically vaccinate kittens when they are about 6- to 8-weeks-old. They would then need repeat injections or booster shots every 3 to 4 weeks until they are approximately 4 months of age. More often than not, your kitten will receive their first series of shots during their first visit or consultation at the clinic.

What vaccines do kittens need?

Vaccines are categorized as core or non-core vaccines. At this point in their development, we will administer the core or mandatory vaccines that protect against the most common diseases that affect feline patients. These vaccines are those that make your pet immune towards calicivirus, rabies, feline distemper and feline herpes.

Do indoor kittens need to be vaccinated?

Absolutely. Parasites and disease can still make their way to your indoor pet by way of you, other people, other animals and objects you bring into your home. Even those who live in high rises are not exempt from this. Throughout their life, your indoor pet may need less optional or non-core vaccines versus cats who spend time outside, but they still need the basic protection provided by core vaccines.

What vaccines do cats need?

As your cat grows, we can tailor their vaccine schedule and the type of vaccines they need that will best suit your lifestyle. Cats still need their core vaccines that can be given once every 2 to 3 years. We cannot let too much time pass in between shots as this will weaken the “boosting” effect of the next injections. During your cat’s annual or bi-annual exams, we will be able to assess their immunization needs. There are some vaccines not needed by all cats. For example, the one that protects against Feline Leukemia is typically only given to outdoor cats or barn cats who roam freely in nature.
